I Love Homebrew
Don’t you ever feel the need to brew your own beer at home? I know that I do. While it may take longer than just going to the store and getting a cold six pack, the whole idea of making your own drink and customizing it to your specifications is too awesome to just forget about. Lots of people get by with just buying whatever is on the shelf and while they may have developed a taste for a particular beer after awhile, I can guarantee that it isn’t their absolute favorite, but is most likely just the most familiar brew on the shelf.
I used to be one of those people until a friend of mine introduced me to the world of home brewing. My friend and I have very similar tastes in beers and one day I was over at his house hanging out and watching some TV when he came back with a couple of beers from the fridge that didn’t have labels. Not being the person to pass up some beer that someone gets for me, I assumed that the label had fallen off somewhere in transit and it was just a normal beer and opened it, prepared to drink the night away.
While it was a beer, it wasn’t like anything that I had ever experienced before. Imagine something that you already enjoy eating or drinking, but that has a couple things that if you really thought about it you would want to make better. In my case, I always liked one particular type of beer but it was just a little two hoppy. Even with that small thing, I had grown to love the beer and didn’t really even think about that anymore.
Flash back to the new label-free beer, which after first tasting it I thought was just a less hoppy version of the one I was used to. I asked about it and my friend told me that he had brewed it at his house. At his house? That didn’t make any sense, so he proceeded to show me how he specially flavored the beer that he made to be very similar to my (and his) favorite beer, but without some of the hoppy flavor that we didn’t like as much as the beer company did.
That was my first introduction to home brewing, and after all of these years I can still say….
